The Olivier Awards, which celebrate the best in UK theatre, are set to return in April, after a pandemic-enforced two-year hiatus.

The event, which will be held on 10 April at the Royal Albert Hall, will crown the best shows, actors, actresses and technical and creative teams in British theatre.

However this year organisers are aiming to make the awards the most sustainable ever, with sponsors Mastercard pledging to plant a tree for every ticket sold.

Other initiatives for the awards include a green carpet made from real, reusable grass, a backstage and auditorium area free from plastic and encouragement to make sustainable fashion choices.

Comedian and actor Jason Manford returns to host the event, which will be broadcast on ITV and Magic Radio.

Julian Bird, chief executive of the Society of London Theatre and executive producer of the Olivier Awards, said: “After two years of our industry fighting to survive through upheaval and uncertainty, it is a privilege to be able to announce details of the 2022 Olivier Awards.

As well as celebrating theatre, the awards will also offer up a number of internships, to help those trying to get into the industry who have been affected by the pandemic.

People will be able to apply for roles within production, backstage and administration and work in the run-up to, and on the night of, the event.
