Vladimir Putin took global tension over his invasion of Ukraine to a whole new level today when he ordered his nuclear forces to be put on high alert.

The Russian leader said he was making the move because the sanctions against Moscow were “illegitimate” and NATO leaders have made “aggressive statements”.
