President Putin has defended his invasion of Ukraine claiming it was a forced response to plans by the West to invade Russia.

During his speech in Red Square at the country’s annual Victory Day parade, which marks the Soviet Union’s triumph over Hitler’s Nazis, he said Russian forces were “fighting for the Motherland.”

But he made no significant announcement about the war as some had been expecting.

The Defence and Security analyst Professor Michael Clarke has this assessment of the latest situation on the ground in Ukraine.
