Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin, the former head coach at Texas A&M and elsewhere, was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence while in Florida.
According to Hillsborough County online jail records, Sumlin was arrested at 12:40 a.m. Sunday while driving along a highway east of downtown Tampa. Sumlin, 59, was booked and released just before 9 a.m. Sunday after posting bond. He refused a breathalyzer test. Sumlin faces a second-degree misdemeanor charge, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 60 days and/or a fine of no more than $500.
He’s in his first season on staff at Maryland, which had an open week and last played Oct. 14. Sumlin is the former head coach at Arizona, Texas A&M and Houston, where he went 95-63 overall. He was fired after the shortened 2020 season at Arizona and served as coach and general manager of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers in 2022 before joining Maryland.
“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin,” the team said in a statement to ESPN. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”
A team spokesperson could not say if Sumlin is working this week. Maryland plays at Northwestern on Saturday.
